On the last morning of the WOASE conference, the ground handling/GSE session was opened with a presentation from Nick Platt, Head of Ground Services & Performance at Heathrow Airport.Nick explained how, in terms of size in comparison to Denver International, Chicago O’Hare and Amsterdam Schiphol, Heathrow has a relatively small footprint. But, as a hub airport working at almost maximum capacity, disruptions caused by inclement weather have a disproportionate impact on flight schedules, which then resonates with airports Europe-wide.

LOCAL COMPANY SHOWS TRUE GRIT

Multihog UK Ltd based in Queens Square has been gritting the area around Bayne Street, near to the village school, where the Council’s conventional gritters cannot safely access. Bayne Street is a narrow and very steep hill making it too dangerous for larger gritters to go down with the frost and ice proving hazardous, especially for parents and their children on the school run. The Multihog is a compact machine with excellent manoeuvrability making it ideal for these difficult to reach areas.

Are You in for a Snowy Surprise?

Imminent winter warnings from the Met Office indicate that the UK could be given a snowy surprise with today’s front page headlines reiterating this. It has been reported that virtually all regions will be hit with frost, ice, sleet and freezing fog, threatening travel chaos and misery for millions of Brits. Forecasters say overnight temperatures could plunge to minus 14C (7F) in some areas over the weekend. With this in mind, Winter maintenance machines are the defibrillator to the nation’s roads when the cold comes. However, the Multihog’s unique multifunctional ability allows councils and contractors to utilise this ‘life-saving’ machine throughout the winter months as well as the rest of the year too.
